Tribological Behaviour of Al-2024/TiC Metal Matrix Composites

Pin-on-disk tests were performed to evaluate the wear behaviour of a 2024 aluminium alloy metal matrix composite (MMC) reinforced with 52 vol.% TiC particles (Al-2024/TiC) in fabricated and thermal-treated (T6) condition. The MMC was produced via pressureless infiltration partially sintered preforms an average particle size 1.1 μm at 1200 °C for 2 h under flowing argon. Microstructural mechanical characterisation carried out on both monolithic (MM) without heat treatment. effect T6 treatment tribological has been investigated dry sliding conditions normal loads 2, 5 10 N against ceramic α-Al2O3 SAE 52100 steel spherical counterparts. Results indicate substantial improvement microhardness (289–343 HV), hardness (25–34 HRC), resistance after (1 × 10−3 10−5 mm3/Nm). For better understanding mechanisms, surfaces worn tracks studied. Oxidation abrasion found as dominant mechanisms MM samples. Even though exhibited lower coefficient friction (COF) (0.50–0.80), composites showed superior by 5-fold higher than base alloy.
